Bollywood actor Mallika Sherawat, who is known for her films like Murder, recently opened up about the taboos surrounding women in the film industry and how Bollywood is still a world dominated by men.

In an interview with Indian Express, the actor spoke about how people took “liberties” with her because of her choice of films. She said, “It’s in our culture, this victim blaming. ‘Why was she out at night, why was she out with a boy?’ I was shamed all the time because I did bold films. People thought they could take liberties with me.

“‘We won’t marry her, she is an actress and has romanced men on screen.’ This is the perception in our country,”

She further added that women in the industry are not given as much respect as they deserve, and are often discriminated based on the kind of roles they take up. “Even now the society thinks actresses are ‘easy’. ‘We won’t marry her, she is an actress and has romanced men on screen.’ This is the perception in our country,” said Mallika.

According to Mallika, Bollywood can only be a safe space for women if more and more women start entering the industry.

“How can the powerful fall when the whole industry is run by men? Women are used as pawns. How many women directors, writers and cinematographers are there? We can count on our fingertips. The game will change when more women enter the field,” she said.

In a recent appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, actor Mallika Sherawat shared how a film producer once wanted to fry an egg on her belly to portray how ‘hot’ she was.

Speaking about the #MeToo movement that took the media industry by storm in 2018, Mallika said that it was “a step in the right direction.”

In a recent appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, actor Mallika Sherawat shared how a film producer once wanted to fry an egg on her belly to portray how ‘hot’ she was.

Mallika dropped by on the popular comedy chat show, and was asked: "Mallika, we have heard rumours about you. I'd like to confirm them with you. It's said that whenever your photo is printed in a newspaper, people pack their lunch in it so that it stays hot for a longer period of time."
