Arunachalam Muruganantham is the man of the moment. The Padma Shri awardee and social entrepreneur, who invented a low-cost sanitary pad-making machine and is working tirelessly to create awareness about menstrual hygiene in rural India, has become a household name now - thanks to the just-released Akshay Kumar film, PadMan.

In the film, which also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte and is directed by Balki, Akshay Kumar plays Lakshmi, who’s based on Muruganantham’s character. Regardless of how the film is and how it fares at the box office, PadMan has definitely helped start a mainstream conversation about periods and menstrual hygiene. And of course, turn the spotlight on the gigantic achievement of Muruganantham himself.

Listening to the real Muruganantham talk is also quite a treat as it happens, armed as he is with a great sense of humour. A self-taught English speaker, he has been tirelessly talking about his life’s work around the world and has even given a TED talk. Dig this - he was named among the Time magazine's list of 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2014.

Here are some of his most memorable quotes from a session he helmed with INK Talks:
