Earlier today, while addressing a rally in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, from where wrestler Babita Phogat has been fielded as Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate for the assembly seat, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that Chinese President Xi Jinping had told him that he had watched and enjoyed Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal.

Dangal is based on the life of wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat, and their father Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained them in wrestling. The two sisters went on to win several medals for India at the international level.

Modi said that he got to know about this during Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu.

Director Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal went on to became the highest grossing non-English foreign film in China, when it released there in 2017, earning around $216.2 million.

“During an informal meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping told me he has seen the Dangal movie and it made me proud,” he said.

Modi also mouthed the famous Haryanvi dialogue from the film. “Mahre choreeya choron say kam hey ke (are our girls any less than the boys)?,” Modi said. He also spoke about how Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign would not have been successful without the support of Haryana villages.

Babita has won two gold medal at Commonwealth Games (2014 and 2018), a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships.
