Actor Abhishek Bachchan, who last appeared in Housefull 3, speaks about his two-year break from the movies and returning with Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming romantic drama film, Manmarziyaan.

In an interview with film critic Anupama Chopra, Abhishek speaks about his career choices and the niggling need to reinvent himself after being part of box office hits like Happy New Year .

“I didn’t say I don’t wanna be an actor anymore, I just said I need to change the kind of films I am doing. It took two years for me to get the right film, that I perceived to be the right film... How was it on the family? I spoke to them, I told them and they were very supportive... They were okay with it. I think somewhere they were like ‘Okay, one year has gone by, what is this guy doing? I think that’s a parental instinct. My wife was fine because I walk my family through everything I do so they are on the same page”.

With Manmarziyaan, Abhishek speaks about getting into the “uncomfortable space” he had been chasing during his unofficial “break”.

“I was ready to get back in front of the camera because I did not have any baggage. Anurag Kashyap’s got an interesting voice. It also ticked off another box, ‘OK, he’s gonna make me really uncomfortable’. And I really wanted to be in that space. And when Anurag came in, he just blew me away. The perspective that he brought to the script, it just jumped up to me. I knew that this is it.”

Manmarziyaan, produced by Anand L Rai, also stars Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal in pivotal roles.
