The screen’s favourite grandmother is no more. Actor Ava Mukherjee, who played a beloved grandma in numerous commercials, TV series and films, passed away in Mumbai on 15 January at the age of 88.
Though she ventured into acting with the 1966 Bengali film Ram Dhakka, Mukherjee became popular on screen in grandmotherly roles in her 70s, when she worked in films like Devdas (2002), Darna Zaroori Hain (2006), Detective Naani (2009), and The Firm Land (2009).
She landed her first lead role only in her last film, Detective Naani (2009), which was directed by her daughter Romilla Mukherjee. In the film she played Usha Dutt, a Miss Marple-esque character whose amateur detecting skills help bust a trafficking ring.
