As the world grapples with the novel coronavirus and its ubiquitous spread, scores of actors have made donations to contain it and help fight the paucity of resources.
From the Hindi film industry, Madhuri Dixit and Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Sara Ali Khan and Vicky Kaushal are the latest people to make donations. They have pledged a certain amount of donation towards the PM-CARES Fund and Maharashtra Chief Minister’s fund.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband Nick Jonas have together donated to a sum of 10 funds, PM-CARES Fund is one of them.
While Narendra Modi instituted the PM-CARES fund for any coronavirus-like disasters that might happen in the future, Uddhav Thackeray, chief minister of Maharashtra founded the CM-Relief fund specifically for mitigating coronavirus cases.
Madhuri and Ajay were mentioned in two separate tweets made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he thanked them for making contributions.

Although she has not mentioned the amount, Katrina has pledged to donate to the state and national fund. The caption to her Instagram post reads: “I pledge to donate to the PM CARES fund and the Chief Minister's Relief Fund Maharashtra. Heartbreaking to see the hardship and suffering this pandemic has unleashed in the world,” Katrina captioned her post.
Alia Bhatt posted the announcement on the stories section of her Instagram page. The post reads: “At a time of great difficulty, while the nation is in lockdown, the central and state government are working tirelessly to combat COVID-19. I salute the efforts of all those on the frontlines who are putting themselves at risk so the rest of us stay safe. I also pledge contributions to thr PM-CARES Fund and the chief minister’s relief fund (Maharashtra) as a gesture of my support.”
Like Alia and Katrina, Sara, too, refrained from stating the amount, but has shared a post regarding her donation, the caption to it reads: “Time to do a good deed. Stay in and help those in need! Your contributions will protect and feed. I urge you to support, I request, I plead. #jaihind #staysafe #IndiaFightsCorona”
Vicky took to Instagram to announce that he will make the donation. His post stated: “While I am blessed enough to be seated with my loved ones in the comforts of my home, there are many who are not as fortunate. In this time of crisis, I humbly pledge to contribute an amount of rs 1 Crore to PM-CARES Fund and the Maharshatra Chief Minister’s Relief fund. We are in this together and we will win this together. Let us all do our bit for a healthier and stronger future.”
Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas have donated to a total of 10 causes. The couple has given to United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, (UNICEF), Goonj, SAG-AFTRA, Aseema, Feeding America, No Kid Hungry, Give India, Doctors Without Borders, PM-CARES Fund and to the International Association for Human Values.
Priyanka took to Instagram and uploaded three posts which dispensed details about these organisations and asked people to donate if they are in the capacity to, so that people the lives of marginalized communities can be eased during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The caption was common to all three posts. It reads: “The world needs our help more than ever. These organizations are doing amazing work by helping those impacted by #Covid19. They are feeding the hungry (including children out of school), supporting doctors and first responders, helping low income and homeless communities, and supporting our colleagues in the entertainment industry. @nickjonas”
As a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations, Priyanka spearheaded the cause of spreading awareness about details of the viral infection with the United Nations.
Yesteryear actor Hema Malini, who is now a Member of Parliament from the Mathura constituency, donated Rs 1 crore from the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for mitigating the virus.
Her tweet reads, “In order to mitigate some of the problems faced by Mathuravasis, particularly the underprivileged for medical supplies that might become v difficult during the lockdown, I have decided to allot one crore from my MPLAD funds towards this to my constituency of Mathura.”
Actor Hrithik Roshan procured N95 and FFP3 masks for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) workers and other caretakers. This move was welcome by netizens. His tweet reads, “In times such as these, we must do whatever we can to ensure the safety of the most fundamental caretakers of our city and society. I have procured N95 and FFP3 masks for our BMC workers and other caretakers... 1/2”
He also thanked Aditya Thackrey and wrote, “My gratitude to @AUThackeray for giving me the opportunity to support the Maharashtra govt in their endeavour to curb the pandemic. It is our duty to help in whatever capacity we can. @mybmc #coronavirusoutbreak #stayhomestaysafe”
Actor Sunny Deol, who is also a member of Parliamnet from Gurdaspur consituency of Punjab, announced that he is withdrawing Rs 50 Lakh from his MPLADS fund. His tweet reads: “I am withdrawing Rs 50 Lakh from my MPLADS fund so that our constituency dosen’t have to face any problem while battling the pandemic of Coronavirus. ”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a PM-CARES Fund has been put in place and the money donated will be used for any emergencies, which might unfold in the future. In a tweet that followed, he also invited citizens to make donations to the fund.
Actor Akshay Kumar was among the first ones to make a donation to the said fund. He has pledged Rs 25 crore to the fund. His tweet reads: “This is that time when all that matters is the lives of our people. And we need to do anything and everything it takes. I pledge to contribute Rs 25 crores from my savings to @narendramodi Ji's PM-CARES Fund. Let’s save lives, Jaan hai toh jahaan hai.”
Comedian Kapil Sharma, who hosts a show titled ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ pledged Rs Rs 50 Lakh towards the Prime Minister’s relief fund.
His tweet about this reads: “It's time to stand together with the ones who need us. Contributing Rs.50 lakhs to the PM relief fund towards the #fightagainstcorona. Request everyone to #stayhome #staysafe #jaihind #PMrelieffund @narendramodi”
Akshay’s wife and author Twinkle Khanna was among the first ones to applaud his decision to donate. Her tweet revealved a story behind the donation, it reads: “The man makes me proud. When I asked him if he was sure as it was such a massive amount and we needed to liquidate funds, he just said, ‘ I had nothing when I started and now that I am in this position, how can I hold back from doing whatever I can for those who have nothing.’”
Actor Varun Dhawan took a "pledge to contribute 30 lakhs to the PM CARE fund". "We will overcome this. Desh hai toh hum hain," Varun added.
Kartik Aaryan took to Instagram and pledged a sum of Rs 1 Crore to the PM-CARES Fund. His caption on Instagram reads: "We need each other now more than ever. Let’s show our support."
Badshah has donated Rs 25 Lakh. The caption to his post reads: “The time has come. Our country and the entire world is facing an unprecedented health crisis. India has been putting up a very strong fight but it needs you. The smallest contribution matters. Do whatever you can in anyway you can. Ive done my bit. Swipe right to find where and how you could do your bit. Dont worry about the number but leave no stone unturned. This is the time to get united and fight selflessly. Jai hind. @narendramodi”
Bhumi Pednekar, too, pledged to donate. The amount, however, was not mentioned. The caption to her tweet reads: I pledge to contribute to the PM-CARES fund .Be it supplies,food,essentials or the research that humanity needs right now ,our support matters.We need to stand up,In whatever capacity we can,for those that are more vulnerable & in distress @narendramodi #jaiho #IndiaFightsCorona
Bhushan Kumar, head-honcho of the T-Series recording label has donated Rs 1 Crore to the Chief Minister’s fund of Maharashtra. His tweet reads: Today, we are all at a really crucial stage & it’s extremely important to do all we can to help. I, along with my entire @TSeries family pledge to donate Rs 1 Crore to the PM-CARES Fund. We can & will fight this together, Jai Hind @PMOIndia @narendramodi #IndiaFightsCorona
