The Inimitable Shashi Kapoor Passes Away at 79

Shashi Kapoor breathed his last in Mumbai on 4 December. The veteran actor was 79. He had been hospitalised at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. According to reports he was administered several rounds of dialysis while at the hospital.

"Yes, he has passed away. He had a kidney problem and was on dialysis for several years," his nephew Randhir Kapoor, the son of the late Raj Kapoor, told PTI.

Randhir Kapoor said the funeral would be held tomorrow morning.

"Shashi Kapoor expired at 5.20pm on December 4 at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai," Dr Ram Narain from the hospital told PTI.

Shashi Kapoor is survived by his sons Karan and Kunal, and daughter Sanjna. Kapoor got married to English actor Jennifer Kendal in 1958, who unfortunately died of cancer in 1984.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences to the Kapoor family:

Famed for the Bollywood dialogue, ‘Mere Paas Maa Hai...’ from his film, Deewar, Shashi Kapoor was the youngest son of the first thespian of Indian cinema, Prithviraj Kapoor. Honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2011 and the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2014, Shashi Kapoor has films like Jab Jab Phool Khile and Namak Halaal to his credit. He boasted a parallel career in international films like The Householder, Shakespeare Wallah, Pretty Polly, Heat and Dust and more.
