‘Why Cheat India’ Box Office: Emraan Hashmi-Starrer Fumbles

Emraan Hashmi-starrer Why Cheat India has failed to make even a dent in the box office in its first day. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film, which premiered on 18 January, earned Rs 1.71 crore on day 1. It “needs miraculous growth over the weekend to post a decent total”, he observed.
The film has now earned Rs 6.80 crore in three days. Business saw a growth over the weekend, but it might not be enough to “salvage the situation”, says Adarsh.
Directed by Soumik Sen, Why Cheat India explores corruption in the Indian education system. While critics have given the premise a nod of approval, the consensus is that the lacklustre writing and poor pacing has resulted in a title that’s mediocre at best.
The Quint’s Stutee Ghosh says, “The writing leaves little to the imagination. Placid and boring, it’s only the unintentionally hilarious one-liners that nudge us to remain awake.”
Why Cheat India was originally to release on 25 January but was rescheduled to avoid conflict with Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Thackeray.
