Supreme Court Will Consider Plea to Delete Scenes In ‘Padmavati’

More trouble for Deepika Padukone’s ‘Padmavati’ as the film nears release.

As the release date of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh-starrer Padmavati nears, the controversy surrounding the film continues to flare up. According to latest developments, the Supreme Court has now said that it “will consider” a plea by a lawyer who has filed a petition asking for deletion of objectionable scenes in Padmavati.

PIL for Expert Committee for Padmavati

Several Rajput groups have been protesting against Padmavati directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, alleging that the film distorts history. The film is scheduled to release on 1 December.

Meanwhile, according to IANS, another PIL filed in the Delhi High Court has requested for the setting up of an expert committee of historians to view Padmavati before its release. The purpose of this committee would be to ensure that there are no distortions in historic facts about Rani Padmavati of Chittorgarh. The PIL also seeks for a Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) member to be a part of the committee.

IMPPA Support to Bhansali

The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) has come out in support of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. According to ANI, TP Aggarwal, President of IMPPA has requested everyone to trust Bhansali’s word regarding the portrayal of Rani Padmavati in the film. In January this year, Bhansali had written a letter to the Shree Rajput Sabha stating that, “...there is no romantic dream sequence or any objectionable/romantic scene between Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji. We have been carefully researching and making the film. We are confident that Mewar Rajputana will be proud of the film made on their revered queen. We do not want to hurt any sentiments and would appreciate if all the social organisations and the local people support us in making this film and making their queen revered by the world”.

Aggarwal also pointed out that banning a film results in immense financial loss to investors and if anyone has a problem with Padmavati, they should not watch it.
