No doubt, the Sanju trailer is a winner and everyone’s waiting with bated breath for the film’s release on 29 June. Ranbir Kapoor is brilliant as ever, Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi seem to be in top form and the film promises to be a helluva roller coaster ride. Here’s what we got from the Sanju trailer.
“Good evening ladies and gentlemen, aaj meri liye bada khushi ka din hai, kyunki meri autobiography, meri aatmakatha, aap logo ke saamne aa rahi hai,” declares Sanjay Dutt as he walks in from the dark into the spotlight. Wait! Is that Sanju baba or is that Ranbir? The biggest win the trailer of Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju notches is that it makes us forget we’re watching Ranbir Kapoor at any point. The voice, the swag and those droopy eyes - Ranbir gets it all bang on and as a viewer you are transported into Sanju baba’s aatmakatha without any hiccups.
“Main bevda hoon, tharki hoon, drug addict hoon... sab hoon...” says Dutt as we see flashes of his life rush past us at 24 frames per second. “Lekin terrorist nahin hoon,” he declares in the end, giving us an idea as to why Dutt allowed Hirani and team to come out with the actor’s story at all. Yes, Dutt had seen it all, having lived a life on the edge, but he still wanted to declare to the world - “My name is Sanju, and I am not a terrorist”. And what better way get that message across to the masses than with a Rajkumar Hirani film?
In a section about Dutt’s girlfriends, the trailer reveals that Sanju baba has slept with over 308 women (minus sex workers). Well, as Ranbir Kapoor put it during the trailer launch... “Mere dus se bhi kum girlfriends thi, meri biopic nahi ban sakti”. Word! Imagine if Hirani had gone into each of Dutt’s relationships, he could have a never ending web series that can play out on Netflix.
“Where is my bloody mangalsutra?!” yells a distraught Sonam Kapoor who obviously plays Dutt’s wife in the film. So is Sonam playing Richa Sharma or Rhea Pillai? While Dia Mirza is stepping into Maanayata Dutt’s shoes, Sonam apparently does not represent any specific woman in Sanju’s life (presumably to avoid any real life heartburns). “Sonam is not playing anyone in particular as we haven’t delved into that aspect of Sanju’s life,” revealed Hirani. So that’s that.
We see a hand blacking out a question mark and declaring that Sanjay Dutt is “NOT” finished. That’s presumably Sunil Dutt (played by Paresh Rawal) vehemently declaring that his son’s career is not over despite being charged and arrested under TADA back in the 90s. Dutt senior was right, Sanjay Dutt went on to give his biggest hits ever with the Munnabhai films in 2003 and 2006.
What Sanju’s trailer also declares is that despite Besharam, Roy, Bombay Velvet and Jagga Jasoos - Ranbir Kapoor is definitely not finished either. This Kapoor is just too talented to be written off any time soon.
