CBFC Cuts out Nude Scene From Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Omerta’

The snipe comes despite an ‘A’ certificate.

Omerta, a gruesome true tale of criminal mastermind, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh played by Rajkummar Rao captures the journey of a radical and hardened criminal committing atrocities in the name of religion.

Director Hansal Mehta had earlier admitted that he knew getting through the censor board would not have been a cakewalk with the film, which is inspired by the life of a real-life terrorist.

Originally slated to release on 20 April, the film’s release was earlier deferred due to the Central Board of Film Certification's clearance process.

“The censor board chief and members of the revising committee understood how certain scenes could not be removed since they are essential for audiences to understand how a terrorist’s mind works. Hence the wait and that’s why a decision has been taken to release ‘Omerta’ on May 4,”

The director revealed that a scene with Rajkummar involving frontal nudity will not make it to the big screen. The board asked the scene to be removed despite according it an ‘A’ certificate.

“That scene was not intended for titillation. I would never do that. It depicts Omar Shaikh’s violence and his state of mind before he embarked on one of his evil acts. Some member of the CBFC got the essence of this scene but had to ask for it to be done away with because of the guidelines. It doesn’t hamper the film’s narrative in any way so I had to accept it.”

Bankrolled by Nahid Khan, presented by Swiss Entertainment in association with Karma Media & Entertainment, and co-written by Mukul Dev, the film is set to release on 4 May.

The film opened to excellent reviews at different film festivals like 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
