As 2018 comes to a close, I spoke to some of the filmmakers who’ve delivered hits during the year to pick their personal favourite films of the year. Here’s Raj Kumar Gupta, who directed the Rs 100 crore + super hit drama Raid, talking about the 3 films he enjoyed the most in 2018.
From what I have seen, my three favourite films would be, Stree. I liked Stree for two reasons. Firstly, it was a good film and it's not an easy genre to make. Amar did it very well. It was his first film, he directed it brilliantly, the actors were great. I have not laughed as much as I have laughed in a long long time. Secondly, it was Amar's film and Amar has been my associate in No One Killed Jessica, Aamir, Ghanchakkar, I was very happy about it that he has given such a good film. You know horror comedy is not an easy genre to make, he really really cracked it and I saw Amar and his personality in the film, which also shows how true he was to the subject.
Andhadhun, because it was a film which was very unlike a thriller, the beats were very unlike the beats of a thriller. Normally, when you make a film like this, there is a pre empt, you announce that there is a twist that is about to come. But in this film, the seamlessness of the storytelling, the seamlessness of the narrative flow and the seamlessness of be it editing, be it writing, be it direction, be it acting, was something that was beautiful. It was very comic at times, the scenes were brutal but the visuals were not. A lot of times you are also inspired by other people's work, Andhadhun was one of those films that really made me feel that.
The third film was Badhai Ho. Bhadhai Ho I liked because it's a very brave film. It's a film about a 50 plus couple, their story and how it was told in a very entertaining way, how people embraced it. It was very brave of the director, of the writer, of the producer to do a film like that and a subject like that. I really loved all the actors especially Gajju bhai and Neenaji, they were fabulous in the film, Surekhaji, the grandmother. So these were my three favourite films during this year.
