Perhaps one of the most controversial films of the year, PM Narendra Modi, the official biopic of India’s current prime minister, has finally gotten a release date. The film will be releasing on 24 May, a day after the results of ongoing Lok Sabha elections are expected to be declared. The film features Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi playing the role of Narendra Modi.
Just before the worldwide release of the film on 11 April, the Election Commission had issued a ban on the film until after the Lok Sabha elections. According to the EC, the film’s release would threaten the level playing field of elections. On 26 April, the Supreme Court had refused to interfere with the Election Commission’s decision to ban the film until 19 May.
Here’s what the makers of the film have to say:
Other actors playing important roles in the film include Boman Irani, Manoj Joshi, Prashant Narayanan, Zarina Wahab, Barkha Sengupta, Anjan Shrivastav, Yatin Karyekar, Ramakant Dayma, Akshat R Saluja, Jimesh Patel and Darshan Kumaar. PM Narendra Modi has been directed by Mary Kom maker Omung Kumar. It has been produced by Sandip Ssingh, Suresh Oberoi and Anand Pandit.
The film was initially scheduled to be released on 5 April.
Following the ban by EC, the trailer of PM Narendra Modi, which released on 21 March, had been taken off YouTube. Instead, here’s an unofficial upload of the trailer still available that appears as the first search result.
