Mission Mangal, a film recounting India’s successful launch of the Mars Orbiter Mission, hit the theatres on 15 August. It stars Vidya Balan, Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari and Nithya Menen. The movie seems to have gone down very well with the audience. On the third day after its release, the film has earned Rs 23.58 crores. Business on the last day of the weekend i.e. today is expected to be good.
After earning Rs 29.16 crores on Day 1, the film was unstoppable on Day 2 also. It collected Rs 17.38 crores on Friday. So far, it’s total collection is Rs 70.02 crores.
The film has also become Akshay Kumar’s highest opener till date, surpassing the Day 1 collection of his last Independence Day release, Gold.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to announce this.
He also gave an insight into the opening day collections of some of the other Akshay-starrer films.
The Independence Day holiday seems to have given a boost to the film, and the predictions made by movie business analyst Girish Johar is quite accurate. “Mission Mangal is expected to earn Rs 20 crore plus”, he had told The Quint. “It is first of its kind, revolving around a space mission. Akshay Kumar is headlining it and it has got a great ensemble cast. And it’s backed by R Balki. So the expectations are high. The trailer has been received well. There is a message, there is quirk, and family audiences will find it appealing. It should be option one on the weekend,” Johar had said.
