After being called out for promoting toxic masculinity and misogyny by several critics, Shahid Kapoor’s latest release Kabir Singh is now facing the heat from members of the medical community. According to reports, Dr Pradeep Gadge, a Mumbai-based diabetologist has filed a complaint against the makers of Kabir Singh for showing doctors in a bad light. In the film, Shahid’s character is show as a heartbroken doctor who is alcoholic, abusive and also takes drugs. He is also shown to perform surgeries under the influence of alcohol. Taking offence to this kind of a negative portrayal, the doctor has reportedly written a letter to the Union Health Minister, Information and Broadcasting Ministry, State Health Ministry, and the Central Board of Film Certification asking them to stop the screening of Kabir Singh.

Dr Gadge believes that given the recent instances of violence against doctors, the representation of doctors in Kabir Singh is “yet another assault on the fraternity’s image”. His letter also asks, “...how can a doctor be a drunkard or drug addict and yet perform surgery in an expert manner? This film will create a wrong impression of the profession in the young generation...”

Meanwhile, Kabir Singh continues to have a successful run at the box-office. The film, a remake of the Telugu hit Arjun Reddy, has already earned over Rs 88 crore at ticket windows in India.

According to estimates, Kabir Singh could be Shahid Kapoor’s biggest hit till date and could also overtake this year’s biggest money spinner so far, Uri. The makers of the film have yet not reacted to the doctor’s complaint and demand for a ban on Kabir Singh.
