Looking back at the year that was, Bill Gates listed down seven tweets from around the world that he found “inspiring” in what he called a “tough year”. The philanthropist and business mogul named Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, a film about sanitation in rural villages in India, among them.

“Toilet: A Love Story,” a Bollywood romance about a newlywed couple, educated audiences about India’s sanitation challenge.

In a series of tweets, Gates wrote about the tweets that made 2017 “better” and made him more “hopeful” for the new year.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, directed by Shree Narayan Singh and having Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles, is based on the age-old issue of open defecation and methods that can be adopted to curb it.

The film is a love story revolving around the problem of open defecation in India and also promotes Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cleanliness initiative - Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
