Tamil cinema’s biggest summer release Theri, starring superstar Vijay, is all set to hit the screens worldwide in nearly 2000 screens this weekend, with special premieres planned in a few countries. Directed by Atlee, this action flick features Vijay as an upbeat cop and a doting father. We list down five reasons why we think Theri should be an exciting watch.
Going by the promos, Vijay has rocked in the cop avatar and it’s sure going to be a treat for his fans to watch. Designer Komal Shahani, who had styled Vijay’s looks in the film, had said audiences will love how he carried himself in khaki, with panache and aplomb. Although Vijay has played a cop in his career before, never has there been so much anticipation around his character that takes on a menacing politician in the film.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday in Chennai, director Atlee said the action sequences in the film have come out really well and that the fans are going to enjoy them. What really stunned him was Vijay’s risk-taking ability in the action scenes. Even though he was advised to use a body double, Vijay insisted on doing the all stunts on his own, including an underwater stunt that was shot for nearly a week under the supervision of some international stunt choreographers.
Known mostly for teaming up with reputed directors since his rise to super-stardom, Vijay has joined hands with 29-year-old Atlee, who has just made one film so far in his career. When the film was announced, everybody wondered if Vijay was making a mistake, but it sure doesn’t look like going by the response to the film’s trailer. Nevertheless, one would definitely like to know if this combination works or not.
As much as it’s an action flick, Theri is solidly packed with emotional content. According to director Atlee, the portion between Vijay and his daughter will be fun and equally emotional. He also revealed that young Nainika, who plays Vijay’s daughter, performed on par with her senior counterpart. The bond Vijay shares with the little girl is said to be one of the highlights of the film.
To appeal to all sections of the audience, Vijay appears in three different avatars in the movie. As a ponytail-sporting father, he will be seen bonding with his daughter and this portion is targeted at the family audience. And as the gun-toting cop, he will play to the gallery with his histrionics. In the trailer, there’s just a glimpse of Vijay in his third avatar, so audiences will get to know more about it when they catch the film in cinemas.
