The Supreme Court on Monday, 25 March, banned political slogans, pictures of politicians and advertisements in public places in Tamil Nadu, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, reported ANI.

In an interim order on a plea by an NGO in defence of environment and animals, the apex court banned political messages on hills, hillocks and other public places in the state, that caused damage to the environment.

Earlier on 8 March, calling for a halt to the defacement of natural environment by covering them with slogans of political parties, images of leaders and their messages, CJI Ranjan Gogoi said, "You cannot allow the defacement of the entire environment with political slogans, pictures of politicians. This has to stop now."

The petitioner NGO has said the defacement was not limited to any particular place but could be seen on bridges, highways, central medians of roads, hills, including rocks.
