After a 24-hour-long nail-biting contest, the Congress on Wednesday, 12 December emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh by securing a victory in 114 seats, falling two seats short of the majority mark. The BJP trailed at 109.
A party needs to win in 116 constituencies to form a government in the 230-seat Assembly.
The BSP on Wednesday said that it will lend support to Congress in the state to form the government and help reach the majority mark.
Congress leader Kamal Nath had written to Governor Anandiben Patel on Tuesday, 11 December, staking claim to form the government.
Incumbent Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has retained his constituency, Budhni, by a margin of 58,999 votes.

The Chief Electoral Officer has directed that there will be no webcasting during the counting of votes in Madhya Pradesh, ANI reported. Wifi will not be used in the counting hall and CCTV cameras will be installed.
Former Madhya Pradesh CM and senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh took to Twitter to thank the state Election Commissioner for passing an order against using Wifi and webcasting counting at polling centres on Tuesday.

BJP leader Kailash Vijaywargiya said he was confident of the party's victory in MP and Chhattisgarh.
“We'll definitely form governments in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Seeing the early trends coming from Rajasthan, we believe BJP will form a government there as well,” he said.

Following early trends, Congress workers bursts firecrackers and celebrated at the party offices in Delhi and other states.

According to the Election Commission website, the Congress is leading in 112 seats over the BJP.

Nine ministers in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP government in Madhya Pradesh are trailing in the Assembly polls as per the latest trends, an election official told PTI.
Reacting to election trends, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the BJP was nowhere in the "semi-final" ahead of the "final match" in 2019 and people were always the "man of the match" in a democracy.
"People voted against BJP. This is the people's verdict and victory of the people of this country. Victory of democracy and victory against injustice, atrocities, destruction of institutions, misuse of agencies, no work for poor people, farmers, youth, Dalits, SC, ST, OBC, minorities and general caste," she said in a series of tweets.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut took a jibe at ally BJP, saying that the trends indicate anger against the government.
Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav said that BJP's policies have destroyed the country, and talks of an alliance will take place only after the results are clear.
“BJP's wrong policies have destroyed the country and this is a result of that. Any talk of an alliance will be done once the whole picture is clear,” he said.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is leading in Budhni seat over his nearest Congress rival by a margin of 19,293 votes.
State Sports Minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia was leading in Shivpuri seat by a margin of 10,780 votes.
While state Congress Chief Kamal Nath exuded confidence that the party will form a government in the state, MP Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the trends reflect people's desire for change.
When asked about posters claiming that Nath would be appointed CM if Congress comes to power, Scindia said: "Let us not put the cart before the horse. Let us wait for the verdict."
The two parties are neck and neck, with the BJP two seats ahead of the Congress, according to EC data.
Sanjay Kakade, BJP Rajya Sabha MP, said that the results for Madhya Pradesh came as a surprise.
“I knew we would lose in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, but MP trends have come as a surprise. I think we forgot the issue of development that Modi took up in 2014. Ram Mandir, statues and name-changing became the focus,” he said.
Incumbent Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is leading in Budhni constituency by a margin of 35,531 votes.
“Voters have rejected what was unwanted, congratulations to them,” said Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on assembly poll results.
Chief Minister Chouhan’s brother-in-law and Congress candidate Sanjay Singh is trailing in Waraseoni constituency.
BJP’s Yogendra Nirmal is leading with 25,514 votes.
Speaking to the media in Delhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “There are many reasons behind BJP's defeat, and proud of being in power, misuse of democratic institutions are some. People from all strata of society are against BJP. This a disaster for them.”
Congress workers burst crackers, danced to the dhol and played with gulal as they celebrated the party's good show in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

As per the leads at 9:00 pm, BJP has won 35 seats while the Congress has grabbed 31 seats.
BJP's Yashpal Singh Sisodiya has won Mandsaur seat with a margin of 18,370 votes.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan has retained Budhni constituency with a margin of 58,999 votes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets accepted BJP’s deafeat in the state Assembly elections and said, “We accept the people’s mandate with humility.”
Modi also thanked the people of Chhattisgarh, Madhya pradesh and Rajasthan for giving the party an “opportunity to serve” them.

Reacting to the ongoing poll results, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said:
“I think result was certainly not as expected and it's an opportunity to pause and analyse, the results. In both Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh we were in power for 15 years and we have done well. I don't think there was anti-incumbency but fatigue factor does come in.”
Congress will go to the Governor House as soon as they win 116 seats in the state, reported ANI.
The party has won 69 seats and is leading on 44 seats so far.
Madhya Pradesh BJP general secy VD Sharma on Tuesday, 11 December, said the Congress’ decision to seek an appointment with the governor to stake claim to form the government was premature.
“They are in a hurry, the final result has not come yet. They should wait, when the final results come, BJP will be the one with the majority,” Sharma said.

The Congress on Tuesday, 11 December, sent central observers to Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh to oversee the election of the legislature party leaders, sources said.
Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge was sent as an observer for Chhattisgarh. Party leader KC Venugopal was appointed as an observer to Rajasthan and AK Antony was sent to Madhya Pradesh, they said.

The Madhya Pradesh Governor House has said that an appointment will be given only after the situation is made clear by the Election Commission, ANI reported.
Midnight political drama gripped Madhya Pradesh as Congress accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of pressuring the Election Commission (EC) to delay the results, reported News18.
Congress said early on Wednesday, 12 December, that it will leave for the Raj Bhawan immediately to stake claim to form the government, NDTV reported.
Meanwhile, the BJP also said that it will approach the EC. MP Rakesh Singh said on Twitter that the party officials will meet the governor on Wednesday.
Congress’ Kamal Nath early on Wednesday, 12 December, said that they have secured the support of Independent candidates and claimed that the party has clear majority in the state.
He was accompanied by senior leaders Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia and Digvijaya Singh at the late night press conference.
“With utmost happiness, I wish to inform you that Congress has won clear majority. We have written a letter to the governor to invite us so that we can prove our majority before her,” Nath said, as per ANI.
Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday, 12 December, tweeted to congratulate the Congress party workers for winning the polls in Chhattisgarh.
Meanwhile, Congress' Shobha Oza told ANI: "We are the largest party, we have won 113 seats. We will form the government with an absolute majority."
Counting for 230 seats in Madhya Pradesh concluded on Wednesday morning, with the Congress winning 114 seats and the BJP settling for 109. The BSP won 2 seats while the Samajwadi Party retained 1. Independent candidates also claimed 4 seats in the state Assembly.
According to the EC website, the BJP got a vote share of 41% while the Congress got 40.9%. The BSP, expected to be the kingmaker for Congress, got a vote share of 5% while the Samjwadi Party got a vote share of 1.3%.
