In the midst of Lok Sabha elections, a body representing about 65,000 sex workers of West Bengal is pushing for recognising them as labourers, on the basis of which they will decide whom to vote.
The sex workers complain about lack of recognition of their profession under the labour laws, "rampant misuse" of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act and meagre rehabilitation programmes offered by the government.
The Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), an apex body of sex workers in Bengal, says its members are disillusioned with the "fake promises" made by political parties every election season and many of them would like to go for NOTA button in this election.

An audio clip where NCP MP Supriya Sule is purportedly heard threatening a former party worker who has joined the BJP has surfaced on social media.
In the clip, she is heard confronting BJP worker Rahul Shewale on phone over his reported statement that the Pawar family and Sule insulted him when he was with the NCP.

Congress leader Hardik Patel had to cancel his helicopter ride to Lunawada in Mahisagar district of Gujarat on Thursday, 18 April, at the last moment after the farmer on whose field the chopper was to land did not give his nod for its use as a helipad, an official said.

Addressing a rally in Thiruvananthapuram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Lok Sabha elections will determine if India will make rules or just follow them. “There is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of voters of Kerala, especially first-time voters,” he said.

A CRPF jawan was injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast triggered by Naxals in Kondagaon district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday, police said.
The incident took place near Korkoti village under Dhanora police station limits when a team of security personnel was escorting a polling team on its way back after conducting voting, a senior police official said.
