BJP's Increasing Footprints Across Northeast

The BJP has expanded its footprint across the region since 2018.

In the last five years, the party has formed governments in Assam, Tripura, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, and is part of the ruling alliances in Nagaland and Meghalaya.

The party has dropped three sitting MPs in Assam including Kamakhya Prasad Tasa who won last time from Jorhat, one of the constituencies going for polls in first phase. It has also been successful in poaching leaders.

Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to Play a Role in LS Polls 2019?

The BJP promised in its manifesto that it will enact the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, which was lapsed in the 16th Lok Sabha.

The Congress, on the other hand, wants to withdraw the bill. It has promised to ensure that no category is denied inclusion in the final NRC, and to restore Special Category status to the northeastern states.

In Nagaland, it is a direct clash of opinions between the ruling party in alliance and the state. While the BJP supports the bill that seeks to grant citizenship to immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) does not want to recognise it as an issue of elections.
