Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently proposed to make public transport travel in Delhi metro and DTC buses free for woman. The proposal is yet to be cleared by the Centre, will be launched in three months and it will cost Delhi government Rs 700 crore this year.
The move was met with mixed reactions. Many questioning its effectiveness in terms of women’s safety in the capital and it called as a gimmick before the Delhi Assembly elections. While others hailed the announcement as an important step in ensuring women’s visibility in public spaces.
