India's Omicron case tally surged to 236 on Thursday, 23 December, with states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh reporting fresh cases of the new coronavirus variant, according to data published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Thursday.
While Maharashtra reported 11 new Omicron cases in the past 24 hours, Delhi reported seven fresh cases during the period. Gujarat reported seven new cases of the variant on Thursday evening, taking the total number of cases reported from the state to 30. Currently, there are 25 active cases of Omicron in the state.
Tamil Nadu reported 33 new cases of the COVID variant on Thursday, taking the total tally in the state to 34.
Besides, Andhra Pradesh reported its second Omicron case, and Rajasthan reported three new cases of the new COVID-19 variant on this day, according to the Union health ministry's data.
Meanwhile, Suresh Kumar, the MD of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital in Delhi, said most of the Omicron cases in the national capital are stable.
"Out of the 34 Omicron patients admitted to our hospital this month, 18 have been discharged. Everyday 15-18 suspected patients come here from the airport. Every patient here is fully vaccinated with 2 who have even taken booster doses in England," he said.
"Most of the Omicron cases are stable and get discharged without any major complication. More than 90% of patients admitted here neither have any symptoms nor require any treatment. We have admitted them to the isolation ward for continuous surveillance," he added.
A total of 16 states and Union Territories (UTs) have reported Omicron cases so far.
Here is the Omicron tally at these states/UTs: Maharashtra (65), Delhi (64), Telangana (24), Rajasthan (21), Karnataka (31), Gujarat (30), Kerala (29), Jammu and Kashmir (3), Andhra Pradesh (2), Odisha (2), Uttar Pradesh (2), Chandigarh (1), Ladakh (1), Tamil Nadu (34), Uttarakhand (1), West Bengal (1).
Tamil Nadu, whose caseload increased by 33 in a single day, indicated that 30 of the cases were those who had returned from foreign travel, and that all but two had been fully vaccinated.
"30 of these are returnees from abroad and 1 from Kerala and 3 from Tamil Nadu," said Health Minister Ma Subramanian, reported NDTV.
As many as 104 persons in the country have recovered from Omicron in the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the new COVID-19 cases reported in India on Thursday stood at 7,495.
