On World Refugee Day, this is from The Quint’s archives.
The Hungarian police are arresting almost 150 refugees every day and very few asylum applications have been accepted until now, according to the government spokesperson.
Keleti train station, which is Budapest’s main railway terminal for international and inter-city trains, was home to thousands of refugees in the past few weeks. It now wears a deserted look after the Hungarian Government closed the Hungary-Serbia border before ordering the arrest of illegal migrants and sending most of the refugees to Austria.
Only two Syrian families are left at the station. Mohammed Ameen and Abdul Waheed’s families comprising 6 children and 4 adults are waiting to board a train to Austria. The cops warn Migration Aid volunteers at the station to move the two families immediately or they will be detained as well.
With the Rozske-Horgos (Hungary-Serbia) border closed, the refugees are finding new routes via Croatia. The Hungarian police and military are manning the Hungary-Croatia border, which wears the look of a battle zone. Special Forces personnel are stationed there to ensure all refugees reaching Hungary through Croatia are taken straight to the Austrian border in buses.
