  • Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on 1 June asked the government for powers to penalise mobile operators for call drops, after most of them have failed to meet the quality benchmark in this regard.

  • TRAI conducted a test drive in Delhi between May 3-6, and in next 15 days will publish result of test drive conducted in 12 cities, and in its report it said that Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance, Aircel and Idea need to improve the Call Drop Rate performance. The CDMA operators and MTNL need to improve across all parameters.

  • The Supreme Court had previously judged that TRAI did not have power to impose a call drop penalty on defaulting telecom operators to compensate consumers for call drops.
