What’s Good?

The first thing that struck us about the Micromax Canvas 5 was the design. The smartphone comes with rounded glass edges on the front, which merges seamlessly with the sides. Almost everyone who saw this phone, got reminded of Apple iPhone 6.

The smartphone is quite thin, and the rounded frame is easy on your palm. The back of the smartphone has a faux leather finish adding to the overall grip and look of the device.

The 5.2-inch Full HD display is crisp with 443 pixels per inch of the screen. The smartphone has a 3GB RAM with 1.3 GHz octa-core processor making it your preferred device for all your work and play requirements. Gaming on Canvas 5 was enjoyable with vibrant graphics and almost no lag.

The smartphone has impressive camera specifications – a 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front snapper. Though the camera takes time to focus and you need to have a steady hand for clear results, the images have good colour and depth.

Canvas 5 comes with a removable 2,900mAh battery, which lasted around 8-9 hours with moderate usage, including 2-3 hours of WhatsApp messaging, 1 hour of calls, 30 minutes each of gameplay and YouTube usage.

The smartphone is based on Android 5.1 (Lollipop) with a slightly modified Micromax skin overlaid.

What’s Bad?

Micromax Canvas 5 has 16GB storage on-board, expandable to 64GB via MicroSD card. But out of 16GB, only 9.5GB space is available for end users, mostly because of the bloatware which comes pre-installed.

The faux-leather back has a very delicate construction. In our review unit, it made a creaking noise when the phone was held with a firm grip.

The back of the device also got heated up quickly with just a few minutes of gaming.

Performance is decent but the heating issues prevail which is a bit of a downer.

Why Buy It?

Micromax Canvas 5 poses serious competition to the likes of Xiaomi and Motorola – the Mi4i and MotoG 3rd gen respectively. This phone packs in power and good looks at a very attractive price of Rs 11,999.
