Umar Khaled, Anirban Bhattacharya Surrender

Two of the students charged with sedition, Umar Khaled and ANirban Bhattacharya, surrender to the Delhi police.

Students chanted “Azadi, Azadi” and “Halla Bol” while the two were taken away by the police. The two have been taken to the South Campus police station.

The students formed a human chain around the two while the police took them away.

Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) KP Kukreti arrives at the South Campus police station with heavy security.

The two will be produced in front of the district magistrate tomorrow at the PAtiala House Court. Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea will also come up for hearing tomorrow.

Yesterday I met him. I would like him to surrender in front of the Delhi High Court. He is confident that these sedition charges will not stand against him in the court of law. But even if he is acquitted of all charges, it will be difficult for him to lead a normal life.

Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi, who had earlier agreed to not oppose Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail, has said that the Delhi Police will now oppose his bail in the court tomorrow.

Yashpal, one of three lawyers identified for beating-up students and media personnel outside Patiala House Court has been arrested by Delhi Police.

ANI has added that the BJP will-wisher Vikram Chauhan has not yet joined the probe.

Don’t Wage Ideological Wars in the Name of Autonomy –IIT-M Faculty

Wading into the JNU row, a group of IIT-Madras faculty members has expressed concern about institutions of higher learning being converted into “war zones”, saying that calling for the country’s “dismemberment and ruin” in the name of dissent is not acceptable.

In a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, the 56 faculty members said there is a need to save educational institutions from the scholarship of abuse and hate and sought his intervention.

We support intellectual freedom, and alternative views are a must for democracy and creativity. However, there is a deep distortion of the meaning of academic freedom which is leading to a vitiated atmosphere in the campuses.
Letter to The President

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association has also written to Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, asking him to take strict action against anti-national activists.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation in Haryana as well as the ongoing JNU row. During the 20-minute meeting, Singh apprised Modi on the situation in JNU which arose due to resurfacing of five students, who were absconding after the arrest of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges.

ANI has quoted sources saying that the BJP Parliamentary executive party meeting decided that the party should put forth their stand aggressively, in situations like these.
