Jhanvi Behal, the 15-year-old activist from Ludhiana, says she will hoist the tricolour in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk on Independence Day.

Behal is the same teenage activist who had challenged JNU Student’s Union President Kanhaiya Kumar to a debate on freedom of expression when the JNU row was ablaze.

She now says she wants to go to Srinagar to hoist the Indian flag. She maintains students and people have “disrespected the tricolour” in the Kashmir valley.

Apart from challenging student union presidents to debates, Behal has a history of activism in Ludhiana.

In 2014, she carried out a sting operation on tobacco and liquor stores in an effort to reveal the practice of selling cigarettes and other products to teenagers. The sting even led to the filing of FIRs against some stores.

She also filed a writ petition in Punjab and Haryana High Court against adult movies and porn content on social networking sites. The court had pronounced the judgment in her favour.

She also received a letter of appreciation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her contribution to the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’.
