In 1971, a media report by the Sunday Times, moved the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to intervene in the Pakistan–Bangladesh power struggle, according to a BBC report.

The journalist, the report claims, had to go underground with his family for reporting Pakistani atrocities on Bangladeshi nationals.

After a struggle that claimed several lives, more than 90,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered and Bangladesh became an independent country.

A video has surfaced on YouTube capturing the immediate reaction of Bangladeshi people after the liberation, exactly 44 years ago on this day.
