The latest update in the Dadri mob lynching case has led to an awkward silence.

Meat was taken out of 50-year-old Akhlaq’s fridge and sent to a forensic lab in Mathura for tests. Turns out, what was said to be beef in the victim’s fridge was actually mutton, something the family has been saying all along.

Last week, Mohammed Akhlaq was dragged out of his house and beaten to death in front of his family. His son was brutally assaulted, his wife and daughter were scarred for life.

It was alleged that the mob that killed Akhlaq was provoked after an announcement in a local temple about the victims’ family consuming beef.

Akhlaq’s family has repeatedly requested not to politicise their grief as political parties across the spectrum launched into a blame game.
