The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union elections are a dramatic yearly affair known for strong ideological leanings, colourful campaigning and rousing speeches.

While the elections are an intrinsic part of the JNU experience, they were stalled by the Supreme Court in 2008 for four years because of non-compliance to the Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations (LCR). The university’s student community held protest marches and petitioned the Court to allow the elections. Elections were held once again in 2012, and has received the support and participation of students, just as it was before the ban.

The JNUSU election campaigning includes a Presidential debate, similar in style to the one held for the United States of America’s Presidential elections. This is held just before the student body goes to vote and is known for garnering a lot of last minute swing votes.

JNU goes to the polls on September 11 and the results are expected to be declared on September 13.
