This Engineer’s Day, premier technical and research universities in India have a reason to celebrate. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) have made it to the Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) list of top 200 universities.

This is the first time that any Indian universities have made the list. A report by The Hindu mentions that IISc and IIT-D have been ranked 147 and 179 respectively. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard are the top ranked universities in the QS list.

IIT-D has improved its position from its previous rank of 235, and IISc Bangalore is a new entry in the ranking list.

The list ranks fourteen Indian institutions in the World University Rankings, and about half of them have made it to top 400, globally.

“While the IITs and the Institute of Science have all progressed in this edition, the large comprehensive universities, such as the University of Delhi and the University of Mumbai have lost ground, principally because of the normalisation by faculty applied to the research indicator but also due to deterioration in other dimensions as well,” the QS says in its release.

IIT Bombay is ranked 202, IIT Madras 254 and IIT Kanpur 271. Jawaharlal Nehru University is the highest ranked Indian Arts and Humanities section and is placed 168, while the University of Delhi is ranked 191.

IIT-D Director K. Gupta said the improvement in the ranking was a result of the institute’s dedicated emphasis on improving the quality and quantum of research.

We are dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and innovation and we pay attention to the maintaining the best possible standards in these fields.
— K. Gupta, IIT-Delhi Director
