Holey Artisan Bakery, a Dhaka-based bakery, came under attack by terrorists on Friday, 1 July as 6 to 10 armed gunmen took over 20 hostages. A gun battle with the Bangladeshi police, which was launched within hours, left at least six terrorists dead while five civilians lost their lives.

The bakery, a sister organisation of a Japanese restaurant named Izumi, is popular with foreigners in a diplomatic zone of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
When the bakery came under attack, people of various nationalities were reportedly present. The foreign ministries of Japan, Italy, India, and the US were reportedly tracking the incident.
