A film dealing with the story of “a young woman who defies her devout father and escapes an arranged marriage because she is secretly embroiled in a taboo lesbian romance” seems to have upset the Censor Board.

According to a Times of India report, a parallel story line in the film ‘Unfreedom’ that follows a terrorist attempting to silence a liberal Muslim scholar made matters worse for the film.

They plainly told me that after watching the film, that Hindus and Muslims will start fighting and also it will ignite unnatural passions. I was aghast as my film is not provocative.
- Raj Amit Kumar, Director of Unfreedom

The filmmaker is reportedly seeking legal recourse now and will approach the High Court against Censor Board’s decision.

Unfreedom is the first feature film by Raj Amit Kumar, who is a media academic and teacher by profession.
