Taking suo motu cognisance of a letter by NGO Prajwala, the Supreme Court today ordered a CBI probe into two offending videos floating on social media that show acts of rape against two women.

The apex court sought response from the central government as well as Odisha, West Bengal, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on the action taken against the rapists.

Supreme Court also sought MHA’s reply on suggestions including registry for sex offenders in a proposed National Sex Offenders Register.

Calling the act “disturbing”, the court also wondered how such offending videos could be uploaded on online portals.

Hyderabad-based activist, Sunitha Krishnan, had uploaded the videos online recently, asking viewers to help identify the offenders.

Since the launch of Ms Krishnan’s #ShameTheRapist Campaign no arrests have been made, even though the men can be clearly seen in the footage, shamelessly smiling at the camera.
